Areas of Research

Recent research has focused on higher education, capability building processes in industrial clusters, FDI in R&D, innovation-internalization linkages, competition policy, inter-organizational linkages for technology development (especially academia-industry relationships), strategic and policy aspects of intellectual property rights, linkages between public policy and technological change, economics of strategy, the small scale sector in India, and conditions of Muslims in India.

Courses Taught

Teaching has focused on economics of firm strategy, innovation, intellectual property rights (IPRs), entrepreneurial business models, public policy & regulation.  I have taught courses relating to Economic Environment and Policy in India, Economics of Regulation, Technology Networks and Management, Economics of Strategy, Industrial Organization, Strategic Management of Intellectual Property Rights, Multinationals and the International Economy and Innovation and Technology Policy. More recently, have collaborated with faculty at the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad to offer a course entitled New Technology Applications, Design and Business Models. Have also been teaching a course called Fund Management which simulates venture capital company scenarios using live deals and active seed funds at the Center for Innovation, Incubation and Entrepreneurship.

All these are offered in the regular postgraduate (MBA) programme and for the Ph.D. level programme. Some versions of these are also taught in short duration executive development programmes on knowledge management.

Academic/Administrative Positions at IIMA

Current: Dean, Alumni and External Relations
Over the years, I have held several academic and administrative positions during my tenure at the Institute.  These include Area Chair (two terms), Warden, membership of faculty recruitment committees of different Areas and several other committees. Two of these responsibilities have been specifically rewarding. One,  I put in place the international collaboration for the Post-graduate Programme in Public Management and Policy (PGPMP), with Georgetown University, University of Texas, Austin,  Carnegie Mellon University and Geneva University (International Organization MBA). Two, I have been part of CIIE as a founder member and Chairperson for several years.

Thesis Supervision
I have been part of 23 advisory committees for the Fellow Programme in Management (equivalent to Ph.D). Of these, in seven cases, I was/am the chairperson of the Thesis Advisory Committee. Sixteen of these participants have already been awarded the FPM diploma.

Consulting and Research Funding
I have worked as a research and policy consultant to various organizations including Government of India, Intermediate Technology Development Group (ITDG) London, United Nations University Institute of New Technologies (UNU-INTECH), Maastricht, UNCTAD, the World Bank, IDRC, Canada and Observer Research Foundation, New Delhi.

I have raised large research grants from various agencies of the Government of India, IDRC, Canada, ADB, the World Bank, ESRC, UK, the Ford Foundation, British Council, Wadhwani Foundation etc.

Refereeing for Professional Journals
I have been evaluating papers for publication for several journals including Journal of Industrial Economics, World Development, California Management Review, Development and Change, Economic and Political Weekly, European Journal of Operations Research, Journal of Economic and Industrial Dynamics, Innovation and Development, Business and Politics, Indian Journal of Labour Economics, Indian Journal of Agricultural Economics and Vikalpa.
