The academic rigor - unique to IIMA, draws the best out of its students and entails intense participation and extensive teamwork. The Case Method continues to be the primary tool for learning at IIMA. It is supplemented by group projects, seminars, lectures, simulation games, role-plays and industrial visits.
International Orientation
New course introduction is a continuous process and many of the most recent ones bring in an international touch through cases and situations set in a global context. For example, in the last two years alone, over 15 elective courses with an international orientation have been introduced.
Pedagogy
IIMA is the pioneer of the Case Method approach to management education in India - a move that has subsequently been emulated by many other Indian business schools. The students are exposed to organizational situations that represent actual complex management problems. The cases also help in developing a holistic perspective combining unstructured real-life situations and decision-making under uncertainty.
This unique pedagogy entails working in groups, which encourages active participation as students learn to identify alternatives, evaluate options, assimilate multiple perspectives, think through management problems and present their insights.
Summer Internship
During the break between the first and second year, the students undergo a summer internship for a period of eight to ten weeks with the Institute's corporate partners. The summer internships are excellent opportunities for students to gain first hand industry experience and to challenge, test and validate the classroom learning.
In return, the companies gain greater insights into the work done at IIMA. They often use this opportunity as a platform to enhance their visibility on the campus, using the intern as their ambassador.
Student Exchange Programme
IIMA's student exchange programme with over 45 institutions in 26 countries, including the USA, France, UK, China and Sweden enables students to acquire a global perspective of business and the economic environment.
Every year the Institute selects around a quarter of the students to spend a term at some of these institutes. This exchange programme facilitates a free flow of ideas and knowledge between the academic institutions, prepares the students for placements abroad and also brings an international flavor to the classroom.
