Gujarat in general and Ahmedabad in particular has successfully preserved its rich tradition of song, dance and drama. Navaratri, also popularly referred to as the longest dance festival in the world is a big celebration. The festivities extend for nine nights. Colourful attires and folk music add to the gaiety as people perform Garba, the folk dance of Gujarat at various venues across the city.
Ahmedabad is one of the five major Indian cities that celebrates Makar Sankrant or the lunar Kite Festival with gusto and where the festivities is undoubtedly the most intense. On 14th January, adults, big and small, move en-masse to the terrace to fly kites with glass coated thread. The mellow winter sky comes alive as a million colourful squares dance to the whims of the master below. This delightful cultural event transforms the entire sky into a canvas for a day!
The annual Rathyatra procession on the Ashadh-sud-bij date of the Hindu calendar and the procession of Tajia during the Muslim holy month of Muharram also make up the interesting mix that’s the culture of the city.
