CMA is a multidisciplinary group at the Indian Institute of
Management, Ahmedabad and currently has faculty strength of
9 primary and 8 secondary members. Research and sectariarial
staff support the faculty in their academic activities. CMA
has its own administrative office and accounts personnel for
general administration. The activities of the centre include
teaching, research, training, institution building and consultancy.
CMA faculty takes part in teaching in a two year PGP-ABM, two
year PGP, Fellowship Programme, and Faculty Development Programme
of the Institute. CMA offers some 20 courses in these educational
programmes. The faculty also delivers invited guest lectures
at other academic institutions.
The centre offers a number of Management Development Programmes
for practitioners. Important ones are Agricultural Supply Management,
Managing Rural Development Programme, Designing Projects for
Agricultural Development, Programme on Agricultural Inputs Marketing
and Programme on Raw Material Procurement in Agro-Processing
Industries.

The research activity covers a wide range of topics related
to agriculture, agro-processing, and allied sectors of dairy,
poultry, fisheries. Important commodity systems studied include
rice, sugar, milk, cotton, oilseeds, cassava, rubber, coconuts,
tea, cocoa, sugar beet, ginger, oranges, potato, tomato, poultry
and fish. These studies examine the issues related to raw material
procurement, processing, packaging, storage, transportation,
marketing, financing and exports.
Often, CMA constitutes smaller interest groups of faculty around
important themes for more comprehensive analysis and understanding
of the sub-sectors/systems. Core Group on Social Forestry, Cooperatives,
WTO, Agricultural Inputs, Agro-Industries are some examples
of concerted efforts of CMA to generate knowledge and literature
in those areas.
The findings from research are shared with the concerned interest
groups in seminars and workshops organised by the centre. Research
papers are contributed to professional journals and books. The
output from the research is published in CMA Monograph series
(currently 226). In addition teaching materials are developed
from this research for use in educational and training programmes.
It is supplemented by the case research carried out exclusively
to develop teaching cases. CMA has registered over 800 such
cases.
CMA helps institution building. The blueprint for Indian Institute
of Forest Management was prepared at CMA. It has prepared a
10 years Perspective Plan for the National Centre of Agricultural
Marketing and National Institute for Cooperative Management.
Some faculty members are on the Governing Bodies of Public/Private/Cooperative
organizations/institutions.
